Auto Recycling: The Vast Network of Environmental Businesses Continues to Grow

Technology and an increased sense of environmental consciousness continue to inspire responsible auto recyclers to keep abreast of the latest developments. One way they do that is by networking with other responsible businesses and trade organizations.

Upper Midwest Convention & Trade Show, May 2-3, North Lake Auto Recyclers, Hammond, Indiana
Auto Recyclers have been at the forefront of protecting the environment. A recent example of that was their work with federal and state regulators to set standards for the safe removal and recycling of mercury switches.

But if mercury switches represent old technologies, then hybrid vehicles represent the future. There is a growing awareness that hybrid technology represents new challenges. Special handling of extremely high-voltage batteries and components, which can be lethal if not handled correctly, require auto recyclers to become acquainted with this cutting-edge technology.

Michael Wilson ARA executive director

Craig Van Batenburg, a nationally recognized expert in the field of hybrid technology
Automotive Career Development Center (ACDC) drew an interested crowd at the Upper Midwest Convention when he detailed the operation of hybrid battery packs and other components. In some hybrid models the battery voltage stored exceeds 300 volts.

As the Honda hybrid (right) used at the seminar shows, the first hybrids are beginning to arrive at recycling facilities. Batenburg stressed the fact that recyclers' staff must be able to indentify these vehicles and process them safely.
