July & August: Summer Heats Meets "Big Chill" in Commercial Credit
Markets. When the new Auto Parts City was granted the official approval to proceed in the fall of 2007, it was a very different world in terms of the economy and finance. Scrap steel prices were rising to heights never before seen. In fact, recycling of all types of materials was not only considered the right thing to do, it also was profitable for all concerned. In such a robust climate for nearly all business sectors, bankers vied for the opportunity to lend to established businesses such as APC Two years hence, as the new APC reaches completion, it is a very different world. Still, the Brosten family has managed to navigate their way through the current economic environment, all in an effort to complete their career-long goal of ushering in the new age of auto recycling in Lake County. Finally, the finish line is in sight. ![]() ![]() (Above) Erecting the steel skeleton of the 10,000-square-foot. retail building is well under way. This building will house the used-tire shop, the retail sales area as well as the employee break and training areas. Jay Brosten examines the 480-volt service box in the vehicle compactor building. It will be used to power the electric compactor. In the best tradition of reuse and recycling, several component parts of the service box are actually used parts, saving money and natural resources. ![]() From the window of the utility room of the compactor building, one has a perfect view of the spot where the compactor will soon be operating. ![]() The fluid recovery building also is under roof and awaiting completion. ![]() Waste oil processed via the clean-burn system now installed will be used to heat the retail building, fluid drainage building, vehicle compactor building, dismantling building and the fleet-maintenance garage at the rear the corporate office building. ![]() ![]() (Above, left & right) The APC auto sales building and adjoining lot await the opening of the new APC. Remodeling and redevelopment of this property is a welcome addition to the Washington Street corridor. |
